1:00 P.M. - 1:50 P.M. SESSION ONE

Brad Snyder

In his keynote presentation, titled "How to Earn Your Star: Sustained Resilience on the Pathway to Excellence," Brad Snyder shares his extraordinary journey from a life-altering injury in Afghanistan to standing atop the podium as a Paralympic gold medalist. Brad captivates his audience by recounting how the explosion that cost him his vision ultimately set him on a path of personal and athletic triumph. Through this powerful narrative, he emphasizes the importance of building resilience, cultivating habits of perseverance, and striving for excellence in the face of adversity. Drawing from his experience as a Navy EOD officer, Paralympian, and leadership instructor, Brad offers actionable insights for professionals on how to develop the mindset and habits necessary to thrive, regardless of the challenges they face.

Brad Snyder began his professional career as an Ensign in the US Navy, having graduated from the US Naval Academy with a degree in Naval Architecture. Through his distinction as the swim team captain during his final year, he earned an assignment as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Officer. Brad deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2008, and deployed again two years later to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. After six months of assault operations, Brad was severely injured by the explosion of a nearby improvised explosive device (IED).

Brad sustained complete vision loss as a result of the explosion, but did not suffer any other lasting wounds. As a part of his rehabilitation process Brad returned to the pool, and after a few months of training earned a spot on the US Paralympic National Team for swimming. At the 2012 Paralympics he competed in seven events, earning two Gold medals and one Silver medal. His victory in the 400 meter freestyle occurred on the 7th of September, 2012, which marked exactly one year from the day he suffered his vision loss.

Brad medically retired from Naval service in 2013, and three years later returned to the Paralympic Games, this time in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Brad competed in five events, earning three Gold medals, one Silver medal, and broke a World Record that had stood for over thirty years. After Rio, Brad switched sports to triathlon for a new challenge, and won gold for Team USA at the Tokyo Games. He currently own six gold medals, two silver medals and one world record.

When he’s not training or competing, Brad serves as a fellow in the Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership at his alma mater USNA and as a leadership instructor for future naval officers. He is pursuing a Ph.D. in Public Policy with the intention of becoming a professor. In this role, Brad hopes to leverage his personal experiences along with his developed expertise to inspire future generations of leaders and warriors. Brad also serves as an athlete representative on the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee’s Board of Directors, and is the advisory board chair for the Navy Special Operations Foundation.

Brad’s mission is to study and apply virtue in all aspects of life in order to empower society’s pursuit of happiness. Brad is married to his soulmate Sara, and the two live in a lovely home in New Jersey.

2:00 P.M. - 2:50 P.M. SESSION TWO

Ryo Tashiro

Ryo Tashiro, an economist from the Federal Reserve, will be giving a general overview of the economy. He will be addressing a few key questions about the economy, including:
• What is the general outlook of the economy?
• How has the labor market performed?
• What is going on with inflation, and how does it impact monetary policy?

As an outreach economist and advisor, Ryo Tashiro travels across the Third District, speaking to various groups about the economic outlook and the functions of the Federal Reserve. He tries to avoid using economic jargon so that those without economic backgrounds can participate in the conversations. Ryo views these interactions with the public as two-way streets. Not only does he see the importance of informing the public about what is going on with the economy and at the Fed,

Ryo also thinks it is important to hear what individuals across the District are experiencing in the economy. Many of the research topics Ryo has pursued were inspired by these conversations with the public. Those topics include his two main areas of focus, labor economics and demographics. Among his many contributions to the Bank, Ryo is notably responsible for the Chamber of Commerce for Greater Philadelphia Economic Outlook Survey.

Prior to joining the Bank in June 2016, Ryo was a business analyst for Bloomberg, where he conducted research on issues related to equity data quality. He has a master’s degree in economics from the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor and a bachelor’s degree in economics from Kenyon College.

Michelle Durham

Life is a series of challenges. It's how you manage you them and whether it is literally a burning building (something I have personally experienced) or a financial fire which you are probably familiar with. You have to face the blaze to extinguish it. When you take a look at the stock market movements over the last month that puts as big as lump in your throat like pulling up and seeing a whole building engulfed and not knowing if everyone got out yet. Both situations take two personal traits: courage and determination. If you possess these, you will have the strength to overcome anything! And THAT is what you and I have in common! Because we have it!

She’s reported from inside a burning building, from the flight deck of a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, and aboard a submarine in the Persian Gulf, was the first reporter in FBI history to participate in New Agent classes at the FBI Academy, and received astronaut training at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. And along the way, KYW Newsradio’s Michelle Durham took her listeners with her. For one special assignment, Michelle underwent firefighter training at the Philadelphia Fire Academy. Michelle was the first woman the fire department ever assigned to ride Engine 50 in North Philadelphia, where she helped put out fires. Her series, “A Firefighter’s Journey,” won eight awards, including two Edward R. Murrow awards. In the years since graduation, Michelle has continued her training, branching into Special Operations with FEMA’s Pennsylvania Task Force One.

Then, in 2007, Durham’s series “Delaware Valley on the Front Lines” took her to the Persian Gulf, where she interviewed service personnel from our area aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise, in the desert, on an oil drilling platform off the Iran-Iraq coast, and aboard a submarine. “Delaware Valley on the Front Lines” won four awards including an Edward R. Murrow and the Pennsylvania Associated Press’ coveted “Sandy Starobin” Award. In 2008, following some FBI special agent training, Michelle was embedded with Philadelphia’s bank robbery squad for “Michelle Durham’s FBI Diary.” While at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in 2009, Michelle learned how to lift off and land the Space Shuttle, as well as how to dock it to the International Space Station, for “Inside NASA — The Delaware Valley Takes Flight.” Her NASA series won several awards, including a Murrow. Ask Michelle what she loves most about her job and she’ll tell you it is the ability to share knowledge while spreading a little joy along the way! During her Persian Gulf coverage she brought in 5,000 cheesesteaks (fresh from South Philly) and 5,000 Tastykakes for her USS Enterprise shipmates to enjoy. It was the first time the US Navy ever allowed an outsider to feed an entire ship.
